4 Parenting Lessons From Endurance Sports
Fellow endurance athletes…dads.
On Friday, our son did a jog-a-thon and it got me thinking about how endurance sports are a lot like parenting.
Parenting is often as rewarding and as nipple chaffing (painful) as a marathon.
NOTE: Nipple chaffing ain’t no joke
Both require dedication, building up tolerance, overcoming pain and the voices in your head telling you to quit.
Yet both are extremely rewarding.
These are some of the analogies that I was thinking about.
The Starting Line:
Just like a race, the first step into parenting can be both exhilarating and terrifying.
It’s a mix of "Why did I sign up for this?" and "This is going to be epic!" (Spoiler alert: There's no turning back now!)
Ups and Downs:
Some days, you’re cruising downhill with the wind in your hair – the kids sat for dinner, no one drew a crayon mural on the wall, and they didn’t dig in against bedtime like an Alabama tick (said in my best Jesse Ventura voice).
Other days, it feels like running a race that is all uphill – the living room is destroyed, eating dinner turns into an action sport, and there is a perpetual machine of never-ending meltdowns.
Hitting the Wall:
You know that part in a race when the voice in your head says “why are you doing this” or “just stop…no one will care”.
Those sleepless nights, toddler tantrums, and challenging children.
I just have to remind myself, “you’ve been here before” and “there’s a second wind coming.”
Just hang in there.
There are rewards
Although parenting has no real finish line, there are rewards along the way.
I found myself filled with pride that our son ran straight for the 10-minute jog-a-thon.
He demonstrated grit and determination.
I felt in that moment, we did something right as parents.
So, let’s lace up our New Balances (the ultimate dad sneaker) and run the good race.
And remember, in this endurance race called parenting, it's not about the speed, but the reward is in overcoming the challenges and making memories along the way.
Put on the after-burners!
This Week's Interesting Thing:
Have you heard of Zone 2 training?
It’s the latest craze in endurance sports training.
Giving you the ability to go long distances without putting all the stress on your muscles and joints.
I read this article that gives you the complete review top to bottom.
In a Nutshell:
Heart rate training is exactly what it sounds like.
It uses your heart rate to determine the speed and effort of your training.
All you need is a watch or device that can track your heart rate.
And the ability to calculate your zone 2 heart rate.
Zone 2 heart rate is a range between 70% to 80% of max heart rate (220 - your age).
Spending most of your time in Zone 2 gradually builds endurance while avoiding injury.
Eventually, you’ll notice your heart rate staying in that zone longer and at a quicker speed.
