BHAG - A Dad’s Path To Freedom

Dads, we all likely share the same basic goal.

At the heart of it, we're all striving for the same thing: ensuring our families have the basics—food, water, warmth, and an abundance of love.

But I would bet that most of us also have a goal or two that might seem like a pipe dream.

A BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal).

And that dream probably looks something like doing the thing each day that brings you joy.

Spending more quality time with your wife and kids.

Traveling to new places.

Exploring new things.

Or driving in your favorite care off into the sunset (I loved Ferraris as a kid).

The dream of absolute freedom of time.

Imagine a world where your day has just two non-negotiables: waking up and going to bed.

The time in-between?

It's yours to command, whether that means going on a learning trip to Costa Rica because your child is into tropical creatures.

Or, let's be honest, a day where you enjoy a few moments of peace without their endearing interruptions.

Now, I’ve got a game plan for this BHAG: snapping up a solid, dependable, profitable business.

Think along the lines of those unsung heroes—HVAC, plumbing, roofing, you name it.

A tried and true local business that’s been around the block, holding its own for over five years and ringing in at least $300k in profits.

Sounds like a plan, right?

Well, birds fly, fish swim and deals fall through (or at least that was what one business guru said).

Well, as it turns out, even the best-laid plans can veer off course.

Over the past few months, I was deep in the hustle, working to seal the deal on a commercial roofing company.

Long story short, after all the legwork, the deal collapsed.

But every setback’s got a silver lining. Here’s what this ride taught me:

  1. The Power of a Dream Team:

Whether it's your kid’s soccer match or sealing a business deal, you need a solid team.

Thankfully, this journey set me up with an ace trio—an accountant, lawyer, and commercial lender.

  2. Decoding the Essentials:

We dived deep, figuring out what makes the business tick—from the seller's motivations to the fuel (cash/credit) a business needs to pay its bills (we try our pitch on the lender)

Pro-tip? Always keep an eye on the human side of the deal. Guess we didn’t truly know the sellers' motivations.

  3. Don’t Go Emo:

As much as we'd like to keep feelings out of business, let's face it—businesses are made of people.

Building connections, fostering relationships, and most importantly, not getting too attached to the business we were buying, is key.

  4. Keeping Multiple Balls in the Air:

One potential deal isn't enough. It's a game of patience, persistence, and diversification.

Always have a few conversations brewing at the same time.

Now, with these lessons in hand, it's onto the next one.

This Week's Interesting Thing:

Lebron James secret to his success and longevity.

Focusing on his mental health as much as his physical health.

Particularly by meditating.

Lebron has been seen on the Lakers bench meditating before big plays (see below).

He is also one of the biggest names to endorse the mental health app Calm.

Man, being a dad, working and projects can feel as cutthroat has NBA championship basketball.

No doubt a focus on mental health is key to successful fatherhood.
