The GPS to being a healthier dad (with more energy)
I uncovered something I do every day that is sabotaging my health.
It damages cells, causes inflammation, lowers my energy level, and initiates fat storage.
The culprit….Blood sugar.
I predict that soon, everyone will be playing detective, uncovering what causes spikes in our blood sugar.
For a while, I've been pondering how my food choices might be sending my blood sugar on the wreckless ride.
As a dad with energetic youngsters, I'm convinced that the real fun is just beginning.
I don't want to turn into a "sit-on-the-couch TV dad" straight out of the '90s (Al Bundy, anyone?).
I'm aiming to be the dad who's got enough stamina to outlast my kids.
So recently, I went out and purchased a CGM (continuous glucose monitor).
And it's got me going Bill Rizer attacking my blood sugar spikes like aliens in Contra
NOTE: This is not doctor's prescribed it’s my DIY science experiment.
Here are the 4 insights I've gathered from nearly a week of monitoring my blood sugar as closely as eyeing the wait staff when you're dining out with three kids (you know, that intense stare hoping they'll hurry up with your order because every tick of the clock is a step closer to kiddo chaos).
1\ Breakfast may be the missing piece
For the past year, I've been giving breakfast the cold shoulder, opting for intermittent fasting until around 11:30 or noon.
I've often wondered if the cream in my coffee was the sneaky culprit spiking my blood sugar.
So, what's the verdict?
Cream, no problem.
But breakfast?
Well, it seems like it might hold the key.
Mornings when I do indulge in breakfast, my blood sugar behaves better – fewer rollercoaster rides.
I'll need more data, but this is my early observation.
2\ It's not just what you eat, it’s what you do
My trusty CGM app showed me some tricks to dodge blood sugar spikes, but they require a change in behavior.
The scoop; about 20 to 30 minutes after lunch, my blood sugar decides to take off like a champagne cork popping on NYE.
The CGM alerts me and recommends 10 to 20 minutes of brisk exercise or a walk.
I’ve been doing a mini-circuit of push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, and it works!
Activating my muscles causes my muscles to consume the extra glucose keeping my blood sugar in check.
3\ Dinner the most important meal?
My blood sugar seems to party at night.
I’ve noticed whatever I eat for dinner, my blood sugar is spiking about 4 hours later while I’m sleeping.
I’m going to experiment with food, time and maybe even evening physical activity (like a walk) to see if I can keep my blood sugar contained while I sleep.
4\ Sitting sucks for health
Sitting for an hour or two at my desk, even if I’m fasting (not eating until noon), my blood sugar will elevate and even go outside of my target range.
This might have been the most shocking thing I discovered and hard to believe since I had nothing to eat.
The takeaway here is that I need movement throughout the day, and sitting through back-to-back meetings for an extended period of time is really bad for me.
Fellow dads, have you ever contemplated the mystery of blood sugar and its sneaky influence on your health and well-being?
This Week's Interesting Thing:
Your body now has the ability to regrow ligaments.
Active dads or dads with kids in sports, there is a new breakthrough in knee repair.
Specifically for torn ACLs.
And it harnesses the body’s natural ability to repair itself.
No more Frankenstein surgery. Bolting on (screwing into the tibia and femur) a harvested ligament from a dead person or another part of the body to fix the ACL.
Now doctors create a bridge (sow in an implant) that allows the body to do the work of growing scar tissue that becomes the new ligament.
The new procedure is called the BeAR surgery (Bridge-enhanced ACL repair) and it has just become an option this year (2023).
I get mine today…I will let you know how it goes.
