This is one of my favorite quotes from Teddy Roosevelt.

This Week's Interesting Thing:

How many times (like every time) does after school go something like this:

Dad: “How was your day?”

Child: “Good” or blank stare.

According to those elite smarties from Harvard, this is the question you should ask your kids after school instead.

“What did you have for lunch?”

The research showed that this question lowered kids’ anxiety about school by taking the focus away from achievement.

This doesn’t mean their quizzes and achievements aren’t important.

Like any good cop interrogating a perp the key is to build rapport.

Opening up the suspect so that you can extract useful information.

Asking open-ended questions not about the crime but about the perp themselves.

Now kids aren’t perps, most of the time, but the same psychology is at play here.

Start with something easy and maybe open-ended to get the words flowing.
